One of the surprises of the continuing fallout from the global financial crisis is that, in certain sectors of the motor industry, sales and production figures are actually increasing.
Nowhere is this more significant than when it come to UK sales of pick-up vehicles. Across all styles, including single to double cab pickup trucks of two-wheel or four-wheel drive setups, sales increased in the run up to the banking crash by 347% over the previous 5 or 6 years. They have then continued to rise in the aftermath, against almost all expectations.
UK automotive industry
It could be said that the domestic motoring market has been hit harder due to personal finances being reined in across the board. Many households are holding off on new car purchases and opting to maintain their existing vehicle for longer.
When it comes to the commercial sector, an expansion in various industries has led to an increased demand for load bearing vehicles. In the UK, the popularity of pick-ups is the mark of this and is even starting to exceed that of more traditional ‘white van’ choices.
So, if you are considering a pick-up truck but don’t know where to start, what options do you have?
Nissan Navara
Nissan provide the current second bestselling pick-up truck in the UK. This is partially down to the fact the Navara offers the largest load bay in its class – providing plenty of opportunities for storage with a cargo area measuring 1861mm x 1560mm x 457mm.
Engine wise, a 2.5-litre common-rail turbo diesel gives the capability for towing heavy loads. There are extra costs involved when it comes to double-cab pickup models and other extras such as automatic transmission but these may be considered justifiable by business buyers.
Toyota Hilux
The 2.5-litre D-4D common-rail direct injection turbo-diesel engine has a power output of just 101bhp but still retains a good standing in the industry. Compared to other manufacturers whose models offer up to 160bhp of power, the output of this model is a little disappointing but practical features, including generous storage with a loading area of 1545mm x 1515mm x 450mm, could make up for it.
Great Wall Steed S
This offering from Chinese manufacturer Great Wall Motors comes with a range of high-end features and exceptional specifications as standard. This includes 16″ alloy wheels, a leather interior, individually heated seats, Alpine CD/USB/RDS Radio, Bluetooth hands-free capability, steering wheel audio controls and electric windows throughout.
Safety considerations are also high on the agenda as all Steed S models come with twin airbags, anti-lock braking system and electronic brake force distribution. Load capacity measures at 1380mm x 1460mm x 480mm.
Mitsubishi L200 Trojan
The Mitsubishi L200 is the UK’s bestselling pick-up truck at present with a bed interior measuring 1505mm x 1470mm x 460mm. Although the equipment level is high, a number of more luxurious additions are only on offer as chargeable extras priced over the baseline cost.
For additional features such as alloy wheels, an alarm, leather trim and navigation systems you’ll have to stretch your budget further.
