The result of driving without insurance and getting caught without it has various consequences in different states, but most courts will give out strong punishments for this offense. Worse is if you are involved in an accident and you are at fault and then you get caught without any insurance, the penalties that you incur in such cases are even larger including paying for any and all damages caused in the accident.

Initially if you are pulled over, the officer who does so will have to in the ticket mention the initial reason why you were pulled over and then mention that you had been driving without insurance; in such circumstances it is heretical to produce an invalid or expired insurance card, as this will also be complained of. The penalties as mentioned above differ from state to state and therefore while some courts will have your car impounded or the tag of your car taken away some others might charge you with heavy fines; there are also some state courts that expect you to spend a few hours in jail if you are caught driving without insurance.

As spoken about earlier, the fines and the punishments that will cost you become heavier if you are responsible for an accident or any damage caused to life and property. You would then have to take up full financial responsibility of the paying for the damage by filing a SR22.

In some states, driving without insurance can turn out to become a criminal offense if you are involved in some serious traffic violations or reckless driving etc. and then when pulled over are unable to show proof of insurance.  A criminal offense as is obvious would incur even heavier fines and punishments that you would have to bear. In most of these cases, such violations and then incurred penalties are recorded in your driving record and are maintained in the record from anywhere between three to ten years.

Renew Car Insurance

In fact after incurring a punishment of having been pulled over and being unable to produce proof of insurance, later on when you might try to renew insurance or obtain a new insurance policy on your car it will become even more difficult for you to procure it. This is because your driving record will prove that you had been driving without insurance on your vehicle and moreover you are irresponsible enough to let your insurance lapse, most insurance companies might not find you to be reliable enough. Your inability to show insurance for your vehicle when you were pulled over might also prove that you skipped payments to an insurance agency or cancelled your policy suddenly. In any case obtaining a new policy becomes mighty difficult after this.

Almost all the sates within the United States of America consider driving un-insured as a severe offense and even though different courts will hand down different penalties and punishments, fines and jail time for the offense, you will be penalized nonetheless.
