  • Do Not Rely On Mirrors: When you are putting your vehicle into reverse, you should always look over your shoulder to gain a clear view of what is behind your vehicle. Mirrors are very handy, and can help you to see what is behind your vehicle; but you should not judge the objects around your vehicle on mirrors alone.
  • Hand On Wheel At All Times: No matter what, you should always have at least one hand on the steering wheel at every moment. Even if you must deal with distractions, such as a spilling drink or children, you should always have at least one of your hands holding the wheel. Different things can cause your vehicle’s steering to be knocked in another direction (such as an object in the road or high winds), so by keeping control you can avoid potential accidents. Should your vehicle veer into oncoming traffic, you could find yourself responsible for injury claims or even fatalities.
  • Watch for Children at Play: All of us were children at one time, and many of us remember carelessly playing on or near roads; because many of our neighbors were very cautious when driving by. Children do not always remember to check for vehicles, so be sure to watch out for them in neighborhood areas.
  • Slowly Enter Traffic: One major cause of accidents are people who are trying to quickly force their vehicles into traffic while catching oncoming traffic off guard. This is very dangerous, so you should always enter traffic very slowly so as not to surprise oncoming vehicles. They should be able to see you as you join the traffic, rather than seeing you fly out of nowhere.
  • Be Polite: By utilizing a little courtesy while driving, you are making the traffic world a safer and much less harmful place. When you see someone attempting to join heavy traffic, let them in. Give other drivers the right of way, and wait politely for people to turn onto or off of the road. Kindness goes a long way, and can keep you from being involved in an accident.
  • Do Not Ride Bumpers: Not only is tailgating another car excessively annoying and distracting to the driver ahead, but it is very dangerous for you. Should they need to slam on their brakes, there could be a very serious accident. You should always maintain a safe distance when following other vehicles, usually the equivalent of 2-3 car lengths.

If you are a responsible driver, you can avoid most wrecks. However, there comes a time in most people’s lives where they become highly unlucky and suffer in an accident at the fault of another. If this should happen to you, you can utilize services like First4Lawyers to file injury claims to recover lost money. Accidents can incur several financial consequences such as injury and hospital bills, loss of work, and damaged property; claims are important to recover these costs.
